eBay Seller Success Story: Consignment Seller Sells $5,500 in One Week!

Congrats to fellow seller Karen Zumbrun in Louisville, Colorado for her incredible success selling on consignment! Karen shared with us that she had just shy of $5,500 in sales in one week with her eBay consignment business.

eBay Consignment Sellers Needed Nationwide

Another way to connect with people who have things to sell, but don't have the desire, skill, or time to list items themselves, is to join my consignment directory. I promote this list heavily with Facebook ads, Google ads, and through other methods. This is what Karen is referring to above when she says "consignment list."

eBay used to have an eBay Trading Assistant Program but discontinued it several years ago. So I created this list to fill that void so when people are searching for eBay sellers, they find my list. The list gets several thousand hits a month - all people looking for an eBay seller to sell their stuff.

What to Sell on eBay 2015 Updated List

What should I sell on eBay? This is a question I see and heaer multiple times a day. Use this page as a resource if you are a new seller and not sure what sells, or a seasoned seller who wants to explore new product lines. Just click the link for more information about potential selling price, desirability, and a little interesting history about the product that will help you understand your buyer's motivation.

If You Are Earning Money on eBay - Listen Up!

This is not a "what to sell" post or a "hot discontinued item" post, but I recommend you read it anyway. It could save you a lot of time, money, frustration, and disappointment in the future.

If you are selling on eBay, and depend on the income, or ever want to rely on the income to prove you can afford a mortgage loan, start preparing now. If you have any plans to move, downsize, or rent, start getting your paperwork in order now. Even if you already have a CPA.

Here is the problem. If a CPA has been doing your taxes for you, that is great! A CPA is trained to make sure their clients pay the minimal amount of taxes. With self-employed people and entrepreneurs, their goal is to whittle down "adjusted gross income" so that taxes owed are minimized. This is what accountants are trained to do. Unfortunately, CPAs and mortgage lenders are looking at financial information from two different perspectives. The CPA is looking a how low he can get your income so taxes are minimized. The mortgage lender (or apartment leasing office) is looking at a person's income and ability to pay, which is the amount of income they have claimed and what they pay taxes on.  Usually, you can't have it both ways - if you are self-employed, you may have to strategically prepare tax returns so that you can qualify for a mortgage.

This is where worlds collide and it isn't pretty. Let's face it, self-employed people can look bad on paper. Because of all the deductions we can take, and how we pay expenses out of our business accounts, our taxable income is usually much lower than what we actually "take home." I have talked to several sellers lately who have run into the problem of not being able to prove their income to get a mortgage. They may be able to afford where they live now and have excellent credit. But after the housing crash in 2008, lenders look at self-employed people much differently - as a risker borrower. It is all about how the numbers line up on the Schedule K (if you are an S-Corp) and how much of a salary you take. Bottom line:

The mortgage process is designed for people with a regular W-2 income, not entrepreneurs. 

I am not a CPA or a tax professional, but I am telling you to consult one if you have any plans of moving in the next 12 months. Make sure your CPA knows your goal of getting a mortgage loan or renting a new place. If you aren't showing enough income on your tax returns, or taking an official salary, you may not be able to qualify for a mortgage or even a rental agreement. It is tough out there for single self-employed folks when eBay is the only source or income, or both spouses are self-employed. This post not meant to cause panic or alarm, but to inform so you can prepare.

Start looking into this now because you may have to make adjustments to show more income so you can qualify for what you want in the future. You may need to show fewer write-offs or take a larger salary to make the numbers work. Disbursements usually don't count - you need to show a salary.

If you don't have a CPA, now is the time to find one. Check around in your area for CPAs who offer free initial consultations.  Call the Chamber of Commerce or use our good friend, Google. This is a great time of year to start a relationship with a CPA - come January through April they will be slammed during tax season.

And if you aren't keeping records on your sales, you certainly should be. (I recommend this spreadsheet for eBay sellers.) Get your paperwork in order now. Taxes and accounting definitely aren't the fun part of eBay, but just grit your teeth and do it anyway. Your future self will thank you.

A few tips:

1. Keep good records. Record all inventory purchases, fees, and supply expenses. KNOW WHAT YOUR PROFIT IS AND HOW MUCH MONEY YOU ARE MAKING. (Yes, I am yelling!!)

2. Don't co-mingle personal and business money. Lenders don't like to see that.

3. Mortgage lenders will look at 2 years of tax returns - so make sure you have enough time to get the right documentation in order before you plan to move. (Talk to a CPA!)

4. Work on improving your credit score. Self-employed people have been stereo-typed to have lower credit scores than W-2 employees.

5. Start saving for your down payment. A larger down payment may help counterbalance any self-employment income issues.

6. Talk to a CPA and different mortgage lenders. Seek out lenders who work with entrepreneurs - they may have some workarounds or connections that will help you. Some lenders won't even work with self-employed people because of all the extra paperwork and hassle.

Make Money Selling Taco Bell Diablo Sauce Packets on eBay

 
I've been selling on eBay since 2003 (almost 13 years now) and this business never gets boring. Something new to learn every day. I read on Money Making Mondays that people were successfully selling Taco Bell Diablo sauce packets on eBay. This "blistering hot" sauce was released on Cinco de Mayo this year. I could not verify that it has been officially discontinued, but there is definitely a shortage as it is showing up on eBay in lots and selling very well.

Prices aren't as high now as they were during the summer. Who knows what will happen once the supply gets really low and people are looking for unique ways to spice up their Thanksgiving turkeys or find that special stocking stuffer for their hard-to-buy-for hot-sauce-loving brother in law.

Prices are all over the place. I am suspicious that Taco Bell employees might be hoarding the stuff because really, who has 550 packets of sauce on hand? Something is amiss here...

Discontinued Shampoo to Sell on eBay - Redken Densify Shampoo for Men

Redken for Men Thick Boost Densify has been discontinued. It normally sells for about $19 a bottle at stores like Ulta and salons. This shampoo is selling for $50 and up per bottle on both eBay and Amazon. Here are a few examples of recent sales:

As of this writing, there are no full size bottles for sale on eBay (which means you can set your price if you find it).

There are 4 offers on Amazon starting at $44.00 + $4.89 shipping.

As you can see, discontinued health and beauty items can mean big profits on eBay. Look for these items at close out stores like Big Lots, WalMart, Target, salons, and other stores that sell hair care products. Discontinued Item to Sell on eBay - Bounce Dryer Bar Fresh Linen Scent

The Bounce Dryer Bar - what a great invention. Just stick it in the inside of your dryer and it takes the place of dryer sheets for 90 days. There are several different scents, and apparently the Fresh Linen scent has been discontinued.

eBay completeds show 112 results when the keywords "Bounce Dryer Bar fresh linen" are searched. Some of the listings are lots of different scents so there are definitely fewer than 112 listings for a single bar. The regular retail price for this item is $5-$6. One can conclude that this item is selling at a premium. Some examples:

Lot of 5 bars sold for $72.99 on June 3

Lot of 5 sold for $57 + $9.45 shipping on June 7

Lot of 4 sold for $68.67 on May 28

Be on the lookout for this item at grocery stores, Target, Walmart, Big Lots, or closeout stores. If you find any - list and price  high. This item does not expire and if you wait until the supply is scarce, you can make more money.

Now, some readers (who are buyers) will think we are price gouging. Not so! We are not selling a life-saving product. No one is going to die if they don't have a Bounce Dryer bar. This is simply the law of supply and demand in action - the less there is of something, the more it is worth. eBay is its own marketplace governed by supply and demand dynamics. Scarcity is a driving force in how eBay sellers earn a living. eBay sellers are also providing a private shopping service by finding these items and making them available online. That is a service worth paying for.

Here is another hot discontinued item to add to your BOLO list, along with the Coconut M&Ms I posted about a few days ago. Metamucil Clear& Natural Fiber Supplement. This item was discontinued and prices on eBay and Amazon are quite high for a single container:

So what does this mean? It means you can make a lot of money quickly and easily if you are able to find any of this product. Look for this product at all the usual places - drug stores, grocery stores, Big Lots, Walmart, Target, etc. Don't forget to check small town pharmacies and drug stores as product may be hiding there.

Discontinued items are literally hiding in plain sight. Knowledge is power. Keep an eye out for Coconut M&Ms at grocery stores, drug stores, Target, Walmart, Big Lots, or anywhere else that sells food. This is a limited edition item that comes around every year. These coconut M&Ms aren't available year round - which means you can sell them for a premium if you are savvy enough to purchase them when they are available and hold them until the supply decreases. Remember, making money selling consumer goods is all about scarcity. The more scarce an item is, the more someone will pay for it.

If you can't believe that you can make money selling food and groceries on eBay and Amazon, think again. An 11 ounce bag of coconut M&Ms sells at about $3 retail Check out this sale on eBay:

A lot of 4 bags sold for $41.95 on June 2. The math:

Item cost: $12

Shipping: $5.35 (padded flat rate envelope)

eBay / Paypal fees: $5.45 ($41.95 x 13%)

Profit: $19.15

Not bad for an item you could pick up while grocery shopping. If you really want to take your at-home ecommerce business to the next level, consider selling groceries on Amazon in addition to on eBay. There are several advantages to selling groceries online:

1. Regional foods. You may have access to something that others don't. And you can sell that special something for a premium.

2. Groceries are consumable - buyers use them up (i.e., eat them) and replenish on a regular basis. And they often order multiples. 

3. Groceries are replenishable. Once you figure out what works, you can simply restock and sell the same items over and over again - as long as the market supports that item.

Keep your eyes and ears open for discontinued and limited edition items. Don't leave money on the table because you are not in the know!

It's simple economics - the less there is of something the more people will pay for it. A hot item on eBay right now is Revlon Colorsilk #72 Strawberry Blonde Hair color. This product regularly sells for around $4 a box. But because it has been discontinued, the price on eBay has skyrocketed up to $44 a box. See the listing above that sold on June 4, 2015.

eBay shows 3 active listings for this product as of this writing.

Amazon shows 2 sellers with this product and prices are over $50.

But, more could be hiding in drug stores, grocery stores, or closeout stores like Big Lots. Don't forget little country drug stores and pharmacies that don't get much traffic. Hard to find discontinued products could be off the beaten path just waiting for you.

Free List - 75 Health and Beauty Items on Clearance in January

 

January is a time for resetting - and that includes inside retail stores. When stores reset the shelves, that means products get moved around - and some are put on clearance to make room for new products.

I have learned from my reliable source in the grocery business that the following products will be marked down on clearance starting January 5. These items may have only been discontinued by the stores because the products are not moving, undergoing a packaging change, or discontinued by the manufacturer.

These items will be on clearance, closeout, or marked down at at least one major national grocery store chain.

How can you use this list of products to your advantage? Follow these steps:

1. Go to your local grocery store and see if the items are marked down or on clearance. Make your money when you buy inventory by getting it as cheaply as possible. Even if the product is not discontinued by the manufacturer, you may be getting it cheaper than your competitors.

2. Look up the items on eBay and / or Amazon to see what the selling price is. There may be room for profit at the clearance price.

3. Be careful with quantities. It is impossible to know if an item will be uber-profitable in the future.  You don't want to be stuck with hundreds of items you can't sell.

4.. Pay attention to expiration dates. You don't want the product expiring before you can sell it. Expired products are not allowed on eBay or Amazon.

5. Determine if the item is undergoing a packaging change or is being discontinued forever. This will help your pricing strategy - if something is being discontinued forever, the price will only go up. If it is a packaging change, you only have a short window to make money before the item returns to the store shelf and the product is available again. This information is pointing you in a direction to look for opportunities. I cannot guarantee that you will find these items or that they will sell for a profit - just giving you a head's up so maybe this information can help you make some money. Make good choices!

How to Respond to eBay Buyers Who Criticize Your Pricing

Recently there was a discussion on my eBay Seller Facebook Group regarding how to respond to buyers who criticize prices. Savvy sellers do their research and know what the eBay market will bear. Have any of these scenarios happened to you?

1. A buyer sends you a story about how they "need" the item and explain all  the reasons they do not have the money to pay your asking price.

2. Your item is listed with a defect or for parts, and the customer makes a comment like, "Since it is in such bad condition, I'll give you X - you won't get your asking price."

3. Customer writes a long drawn-out narrative of everything that has gone wrong in their life and why you should come down on your price.

4. Customer compares the price of your vintage or discontinued item to a retail price. "I can get this at Costco for $10, why are you charging $30? (Obviously, they can't get it at Costco or they wouldn't be on eBay looking for it.)

The best course of action is to hold your tongue and reply in a professional way. Here are some great responses from sellers:

Lisa said, "Thank you for your interest. My price is firm but does include free shipping if that helps." Don't get drawn into rationalizing/explaining.

Amy said, "Accept, counter or decline, then move on. I have best offer on all my items. When I get an offer I glance at the offer and any message they may include and click the button and move on. There's no need for snarky replies, drawn out explanations, etc. It's a negotiation technique that some buyers use - it either works for them or doesn't. Sellers insulting them, trying to make them feel bad or just being plain out rude isn't going to stop them from making the same offers elsewhere. Just accept, counter or decline."


Sharon said, "I am sorry, I am not accepting offers on this product at this time."

These are all great answers. Bottom line, don't take it personally if someone doesn't like your price. You don't have to explain your pricing or rationalize about why an item is priced a certain way. This is business. Keep it professional.  Do your research, know the value of your item, and stick to your price. The right buyer will come along and be happy to pay your asking price.
