eBay Seller's Right to Cancel Unwelcome Bids

Did you know that as an eBay seller, you are allowed to set certain criteria for prospective bidders? I put some Starbucks gift cards up for sale this week, and have learned from past experience to screen customers who buy gift cards. Scammers like to claim that the gift card had no value, file a claim, and then the seller is out the gift card and the money from the sale. I learned that lesson the hard way.

So, I put this disclaimer on my listing:

"Special Terms of Listing: Bidders must have at least 50 feedbacks to bid on this item, and no negatives for non-payment. We reserve the right to cancel bids that do not meet this criteria.

Please note: In accordance with eBay policy, sellers may exclude buyers at any time prior to the listing close and are free to cancel unwelcome bids. After a seller has canceled a bid, the bidder may not place a new bid without the seller's permission. Buyers who do not meet the seller’s terms as outlined in the item listing also are not permitted to bid on or buy the item."

This is perfectly eBay legal. Click here to read eBay's Policy on unwelcome buying. If a buyer bids on your listing without meeting your terms, you have the right to report them to eBay. You have to be proactive on eBay to avoid the scammers.

Benefits of Using Private Listings on eBay

You have probably seen private listings on eBay - where the buyer's ID is only known to the seller. On the bidding history, purchase history, and completed listings, instead of a buyer ID the listing only says "User ID kept private." Private listings do more than just protect the buyer's identity, they can work in the seller's favor also.

Creating a private listing on eBay serves several purposes for the buyer. Private listings give buyers more peace of mind when they are buying products that may be sensitive, embarrassing, or offensive to some people. Private listings on these types of items get more bids since the item will not show on the buyer's feedback page or history. Private listings are usually used for adult listings, undergarments, and personal healthcare products. Second, some buyers just want to keep their transactions on the internet private, regardless of the type of item. Their purchases are their business, and they prefer to work with sellers who respect their privacy.

Private listings can also work for the seller. Let's say you are selling a niche product or you have discovered something that sells very well on eBay. You don't want your competition to be able to scroll through your feedback and look at what items have sold. When you make your listings private, they show up on your feedback (as well as the buyer's) as private - all that shows is the buyer's comment, the buyer's ID, and the date the comment is left.

Now, your competition can still look in your store and see what items you offer, but they can't scroll through your feedback and see what actually sold. The only way your competition can discover what you have sold is to search completed listings for the actual items in your store. You can' hide completely, but you can make it a bit harder for your competition to figure out which of your products are actually selling.

Get FREE Starbucks Gift Cards to Resell on eBay

Anyone who has ever been into a Starbucks knows the beverages aren't cheap. As a frugal mom, I hardly ever go there - I brew my Green Mountain coffee at home and add flavored creamer and cappuccino mix. I have found a way to get Starbucks gift cards free and I sell them on eBay. Starbucks gift cards hold their value very well. Some sell for more than the face value. Here are a few examples of recently completed listings - notice the listings all have lots of bids which indicates an item's popularity.

Ok, so here is what I do. Sign up at Swagbucks. You earn points for using their search engine. You don't have to use it exclusively, but just use it a few times a day. Some creative ways to use the SwagBucks search and win feature:

When kids are doing homework. They are programmed to go to Google. Tell them they must use SwagBucks now -put the shortcut on your desktop and on bookmarks. Retrain them to search with SwagBucks when they are doing homework or reports. It can be used on multiple computers. Depending on how old they are, you can even bribe them with a gift card when you get enough points! (Works for teenagers.)

If you are married or have another significant other in the home or that uses your computer, also explain how this works and train them to use SwagBucks. Once the gift cards start rolling in, they will understand. Use the same bribery technique as above.

Remember to use it yourself. Whether you are searching for coupons, a recipe, blog material, celebrity gossip, shopping codes, or a news story, use SwagBucks. Make it part of your routine.

Once you have 130 points, you can redeem a $10 Starbucks Gift Card. The Starbucks cards are the only ones on Swagbucks that are NOT e-Cards. In other words, you get an actual gift card in the mail in about a week. Every other gift card on Swagbucks must be redeemed online - such as at,, etc. And with e-Cards comes shipping fees on the merchandise you are getting free, so your "prize" can actually be eaten up paying for shipping. (I found this out the hard way.) The Starbucks card is is an actual physical card that you can sell on eBay.

I usually wait until I have a few and sell them as a batch. That reduces your listing fees, final value fees, and Paypal fees. And always use delivery confirmation when shipping a gift card, so you can prove that the item was delivered to the buyer.

Click hereto sign up at Swagbucks and start earning points for Starbucks cards to keep or sell for cash on eBay!

Auctiva No Longer Free - Make the Switch to Seller Sourcebook!

Auctiva, one of the main image hosting and auction template services, has announced that their services will no longer be free, beginning in July. Unfortunately, this change may affect your bottom line if you have been using Auctiva's free plan. The new pricing structure is a bit confusing, to say the least.

Seller Sourcebook is stepping up to the plate to help Auctiva customers. In a letter to Auctiva customers on the SSB site, founder and CEO Kristen Rice writes,

"SSB has been and remains a flat fee service with no listing fees, insertion fees or transaction fees. To help ease the financial transition from a free service to a flat fee service we are offering a 10% discount on our subscription rates to former Auctiva Members. Please contact our support staff who will be happy to provide a coupon code you may use at the time of your sign-up."

As a current SSB customer and partner, I am thrilled to see SSB making this generous offer. SSB has also developed an Auctiva integration tool to "import your actual listings and to convert (Revise) them at eBay to contain URLs to SSB instead of Auctiva. This way you won't have to recreate them. We estimate this function will be available within several days. We are also planning to give the ability to Relist your items."

I have been a SSB customer for years and cannot rave enough about their exceptional customer service, huge template selection, and their user friendly site. If you are an Auctiva customer looking for an auction template or image hosting service, I absolutely recommed SSB. They will more than meet your needs, they will exceed your expectations. Click here to get started with SSB and find out what you have been missing.

Don't Have a Goodwill Store Near You - Try Goodwill Online!

Goodwill Too

The Goodwill store is a goldmine. I will admit, I have an addition problem. My car won't let me pass one - it goes on autopilot. I am always thinking, "I wonder what is in there today." Goodwill Industries has really gotten on the ball over the last few years improving their thrift stores. The quality merchandise in the Goodwill store is unbelievable, in fact, I couldn't have started my eBay business without it. Over the last 6 years, I have made over $200,000 reselling Goodwill store finds.

But what if you don't have a Goodwill store near you? Well, you can still get in on the action. Goodwill Too is the online version of the Goodwill Store. You can find all kinds of new and gently used items to add to your eBay store including clothing, electronics, jewelry, health and beauty products, toys, home decor, and even As Seen on TV products. Here are a few examples of items on Goodwill Too:

Obey Your Body Wrinkle Cream - $3.99, retails for $64.95

Barbie and Ken Star Trek 30th Anniversary - $14.99
Retails for $72.99.

You may or may not be able to find items to resell on Goodwill Too. Remember, you will be paying shipping on whatever you order. Shipping is an $8.99 flat fee to U.S. addresses (up to 150 lbs). So if you order several items, that is a great deal. However, this is also a way save money on items for yourself or your family, and you will be supporting a charity at the same time. Click here to browse around Goodwill Too and see what you can find. Pay special attention to the RECENTLY ARRIVED section so you can grab the good deals before anyone else sees them!

Thrift Store Item to Sell on eBay - Bumbo Baby Seat

The Bumbo seat is an infant chair designed to support a baby's posture while helping the baby learn to sit upright. Moms of infants know about this seat, but at $40 retail, moms are looking to eBay for a better deal.

You can find this item at thrift stores and garage sales for less than $5. I have seen them at The Goodwill Store for $3. Selling price on eBay can be up to $30. The pink ones seem to sell for the most. Some eBay sellers are hesitant to sell baby gear, such as car seats, for safety issue. But, the Bumbo is made of a rubber material and is a one-piece unit. It is really easy to clean, pack, and ship.

Here are a few completed listings for the Bumbo seat in gently used or EUC condition.
