Discontinued Item to Sell on eBay - Metamucil Clear & Natural

Here is another hot discontinued item to add to your BOLO list, along with the Coconut M&Ms I posted about a few days ago. Metamucil Clear& Natural Fiber Supplement. This item was discontinued and prices on eBay and Amazon are quite high for a single container:

Amazon shows several offerings starting at $37 for a single 11.7 ounce container:

So what does this mean? It means you can make a lot of money quickly and easily if you are able to find any of this product. Look for this product at all the usual places - drug stores, grocery stores, Big Lots, Walmart, Target, etc. Don't forget to check small town pharmacies and drug stores as product may be hiding there.

Discontinued items are literally hiding in plain sight. Knowledge is power. Discontinued Shampoo to Sell on eBay - Redken Densify Shampoo for Men

Redken for Men Thick Boost Densify has been discontinued. It normally sells for about $19 a bottle at stores like Ulta and salons. This shampoo is selling for $50 and up per bottle on both eBay and Amazon. Here are a few examples of recent sales:

As of this writing, there are no full size bottles for sale on eBay (which means you can set your price if you find it).

There are 4 offers on Amazon starting at $44.00 + $4.89 shipping.

As you can see, discontinued health and beauty items can mean big profits on eBay. Look for these items at close out stores like Big Lots, WalMart, Target, salons, and other stores that sell hair care products. Discontinued Item to Sell on eBay - Bounce Dryer Bar Fresh Linen Scent

The Bounce Dryer Bar - what a great invention. Just stick it in the inside of your dryer and it takes the place of dryer sheets for 90 days. There are several different scents, and apparently the Fresh Linen scent has been discontinued.

eBay completeds show 112 results when the keywords "Bounce Dryer Bar fresh linen" are searched. Some of the listings are lots of different scents so there are definitely fewer than 112 listings for a single bar. The regular retail price for this item is $5-$6. One can conclude that this item is selling at a premium. Some examples:

Lot of 5 bars sold for $72.99 on June 3

Lot of 5 sold for $57 + $9.45 shipping on June 7

Lot of 4 sold for $68.67 on May 28

Be on the lookout for this item at grocery stores, Target, Walmart, Big Lots, or closeout stores. If you find any - list and price  high. This item does not expire and if you wait until the supply is scarce, you can make more money.

Now, some readers (who are buyers) will think we are price gouging. Not so! We are not selling a life-saving product. No one is going to die if they don't have a Bounce Dryer bar. This is simply the law of supply and demand in action - the less there is of something, the more it is worth. eBay is its own marketplace governed by supply and demand dynamics. Scarcity is a driving force in how eBay sellers earn a living. eBay sellers are also providing a private shopping service by finding these items and making them available online. That is a service worth paying for.

Revlon Colorsilk #72 Discontinued Hair Color Selling for $45 a Box on eBay

 

It's simple economics - the less there is of something the more people will pay for it. A hot item on eBay right now is Revlon Colorsilk #72 Strawberry Blonde Hair color. This product regularly sells for around $4 a box. But because it has been discontinued, the price on eBay has skyrocketed up to $44 a box. See the listing above that sold on June 4, 2015.

eBay shows 3 active listings for this product as of this writing.

Amazon shows 2 sellers with this product and prices are over $50.

But, more could be hiding in drug stores, grocery stores, or closeout stores like Big Lots. Don't forget little country drug stores and pharmacies that don't get much traffic. Hard to find discontinued products could be off the beaten path just waiting for you.

Free List - 75 Health and Beauty Items on Clearance in January

 

January is a time for resetting - and that includes inside retail stores. When stores reset the shelves, that means products get moved around - and some are put on clearance to make room for new products.

I have learned from my reliable source in the grocery business that the following products will be marked down on clearance starting January 5. These items may have only been discontinued by the stores because the products are not moving, undergoing a packaging change, or discontinued by the manufacturer.

These items will be on clearance, closeout, or marked down at at least one major national grocery store chain.

How can you use this list of products to your advantage? Follow these steps:

1. Go to your local grocery store and see if the items are marked down or on clearance. Make your money when you buy inventory by getting it as cheaply as possible. Even if the product is not discontinued by the manufacturer, you may be getting it cheaper than your competitors.

2. Look up the items on eBay and / or Amazon to see what the selling price is. There may be room for profit at the clearance price.

3. Be careful with quantities. It is impossible to know if an item will be uber-profitable in the future.  You don't want to be stuck with hundreds of items you can't sell.

4.. Pay attention to expiration dates. You don't want the product expiring before you can sell it. Expired products are not allowed on eBay or Amazon.

5. Determine if the item is undergoing a packaging change or is being discontinued forever. This will help your pricing strategy - if something is being discontinued forever, the price will only go up. If it is a packaging change, you only have a short window to make money before the item returns to the store shelf and the product is available again. This information is pointing you in a direction to look for opportunities. I cannot guarantee that you will find these items or that they will sell for a profit - just giving you a head's up so maybe this information can help you make some money. Make good choices!

Discontinued Item to Sell on eBay - Redken Rewind 06 Solid Water

This is a different product than the Redken Rewind 06 I posted back in March. This product is Redken Solid Water 06 Wet Set Gel. It has also been discontinued. I have not personally seen this on clearance, but if the trend holds, you should look for this at hair salons, Ulta, Kroger, Target, and other stores that carry Redken products. It may be marked down on clearance since it has been discontinued. (In the past, I have found discontinued Redken products at these places and they are usually marked down 50-75% off the regular price.)

Vintage Perfume Bottles

Today's post is provided by Amy Kagey, our resident vintage perfume bottle expert on the eBay Mom's Facebook Group. Amy keeps us informed and always shares her great finds with the group. Here is Amy's advice:

It is always a good idea to look for perfume and even empty perfume bottles at garage sales, thrift stores and estate sales for resale purposes. Many people collect vintage perfumes and others are simply looking for their favorite perfume that has been discontinued. Other times, buyers are searching Ebay for designer fragrances so they can get a lower price.

I will usually purchase perfumes that aren't completely full, also, if they are collectible or sought after.

I look for:

1. Current designer brands (Chanel, Burberry, Armani, Dolce & Gabanna....)

2. Discontinued fragrances (Almost any discontinued perfume has a disappointed fan somewhere. Some older Mary Kay does well in this category.)

3. Older perfume bottles are very collectible, even if they are empty. These tend to be bottles from higher-end fragrances. Look for heavy, well-made bottles, unusual designs or figural bottles and anything marked France. Some very collectible bottles were made by Lalique, Tiffany, Baccarat, and Steuben.

I'm often asked about Avon bottles. Avon made many hundreds of styles of bottles, most labeled as collectible. I have found that most don't bring much money on Ebay at all. The exception to this are the newer high-end fragrances that Avon has been producing recently and some fragrances that were discontinued.

I have found perfumes to resell at garage sales, estate sales (check the bathrooms and dresser tops), thrift stores, auctions, and overstock stores. There is a great market out there for collectors and just people searching for their discontinued favorites. I hope this article will help you in your Ebay travels!

American Crew Tea Tree Pomade - Discontinued Item to Sell on eBay

Here is another discontinued product to look for at Big Lots or anywhere that sells hair care products. The item is American Crew Tea Tree Pomade. As you can see from this forum post, there is a thread on this very subject:

Finally, my research tool Hammertap shows this item with a 71% sell through rate:


Again, look at Big Lots and other close out stores that carry discontinued merchandise. You may be able to find some marked down at WalMart, Target, or a grocery store that carries upscale hair products.

Clearance Item to Sell on eBay - 100% Sell Through Rate

I found Nicorette Commit Lozenges on clearance at Publix this morning while I was doing my grocery shopping. I ALWAYS check the clearance section no matter where I am, you never know what gems are hiding in there. The box of Nicorette Commit lozenges, Cappuccino, 72 count, 2 mg, was marked down to $12. Regular retail price is about $40. You may remember a post a while back about Nicorette orange flavor gum that was discontinued and was a hot item for a while.

So here is the research. Whenever I find something like this, I check it out on Hammertap to see the sell through rate and average sale price. When I searched for the terms NICORETTE LOZENGE 72 CAPPUCCINO, I got these results:



Then, using Hammertap, you can go to this screen and see the actual listings:



Hammertap is a couple of days behind, because the data is extracted from eBay and sent over - it isn't like looking at completed listings that are up to the minute. So you always want to check completed listings, too. Here is listing for this exact item that ended yesterday, November 6:

Now you may ask, "How did you know to buy it?" I kind of already knew that the stop smoking products are expensive, and this seemed like it had been marked down quite a bit. I went up to customer service and asked if they could tell me what the regular price was, and they looked it up - regular retail is $44. I asked if this flavor had been discontinued, and they said they didn't know. The expiration date is 5/10, the package is sealed, so I took a chance. I will let you know how it goes, and please let me know if you find any or learn if this product is discontinued. If it is discontinued, it will probably be selling for much more in the future.

Discontinued Item to Sell on eBay - Coconut M&Ms

Keep an eye out for Coconut M&Ms at grocery stores, drug stores, Target, Walmart, Big Lots, or anywhere else that sells food. This is a limited edition item that comes around every year. These coconut M&Ms aren't available year round - which means you can sell them for a premium if you are savvy enough to purchase them when they are available and hold them until the supply decreases. Remember, making money selling consumer goods is all about scarcity. The more scarce an item is, the more someone will pay for it.

If you can't believe that you can make money selling food and groceries on eBay and Amazon, think again. An 11 ounce bag of coconut M&Ms sells at about $3 retail Check out this sale on eBay:

A lot of 4 bags sold for $41.95 on June 2. The math:

Item cost: $12

Shipping: $5.35 (padded flat rate envelope)

eBay / Paypal fees: $5.45 ($41.95 x 13%)

Profit: $19.15

Not bad for an item you could pick up while grocery shopping. If you really want to take your at-home ecommerce business to the next level, consider selling groceries on Amazon in addition to on eBay. There are several advantages to selling groceries online:

1. Regional foods. You may have access to something that others don't. And you can sell that special something for a premium.

2. Groceries are consumable - buyers use them up (i.e., eat them) and replenish on a regular basis. And they often order multiples. 

3. Groceries are replenishable. Once you figure out what works, you can simply restock and sell the same items over and over again - as long as the market supports that item.

Keep your eyes and ears open for discontinued and limited edition items. Don't leave money on the table because you are not in the know!

This item was included in the February Hot List. Maybelline Eyebrow Pencil in the color CHARCOAL. The color has been discontinued. Sellers have reported finding this at dollar stores for $1 per twin pack. As you can see, the lot above sold for $89.99, which is only about $4 profit per item, but if you find a bunch of them it is a good profit. Discontinued Neutrogena Item to Sell on eBay

Neutrogena has discontinued its oil-free anti-acne moisturizer. I saw this at Big Lots for $4.50 per box. It is selling on eBay for about twice that price. The listing below is for 2 boxes that sold for $16.99 on May 1:



You could put several of these in a lot together and make a nice profit. It has been my experience that discontinued Neutrogena products sell very well on eBay. If you find any of these, you may want to hold on to them and list them in a few weeks when the supply is even lower. Discontinued Item to Sell on eBay - Neutrogena After Sun Lotion

This item was discontinued about 2 years ago. It is hard to find locally. It is out of stock on Amazon also, but some sellers have reported finding it at closeout centers for $5 - $8 a tube. Here is a listing for 2 tubes that sold for $45 on September 9:

Discontinued Item to Sell on eBay - Pacquin Hand or Body Cream

Discontinued hand and body cream by Pfizer. This cream has been around since the 1960’s. Comes in regular, medicated, aloe, and plus. Click here to read more about the item. Look for it at closeout stores and wherever hand cream is sold. Retail price (if you can find it) is around $5 for the 8 ounce container, and it is selling on eBay for over $60 for an 8 ounce container!
