Thrift Store Item to Sell on eBay - Alpaca Sweaters

The alpaca is an animal related to the llama, looks like a long-haired, shaggy llama, and grows thick, long, soft wool. The wool from an alpaca is similar to sheep's wool or mohair, but it is softer and silkier and takes much longer to grow. Therefore, Alpaca fleece is quite expensive and in high demand all over the world. Alpaca does almost as well as cashmere. As always, the larger sizes will bring a higher profit, but don't leave an Alpaca sweater behind in a thrift store! Here are a few recently completed listings for Alpaca sweaters. All listings are for used or pre-owned items that you can pick up in thrift stores for just a few dollars. Notice that all of these items sold for over $100!

Peruvian Connection Burgundy Alpaca Sweater Cardigan XL

VINCE GREY SHAWL CASHMERE ALPACA CARDIGAN SWEATER M

Congratulations to Ginny and Shel for winning the two $50 Walmart Gift Cards! Stay tuned for more great giveaways to come.

Free eBay Coach eBook and Free Trial at Stamps.com

How about 2 freebies at once?

You can try Stamps.com for free. Stamps.com enables you to do everything you can do at the Post Office from the convenience of your desk (in your pajamas if you want)! You can:

Print stamps
Print shipping labels
Print directly on envelopes
Add Stamps.com insurance
Add Delivery Confirmation™ to anything
Add Delivery Confirmation free to your Priority Mail®
Track shipments and provide tracking numbers to your customers

I have been using Stamps.com for over 5 years. I avoid the post office at all costs. I print all my postage at home and my mail carrier just picks everything up at my door each day. (Schedule pickups thru USPS.com. I schedule mine a month at a time.)

Stamps.com enables you to print any kind of postage, including international. I don't have to worry about getting to the post office before they close, getting out in bad weather to go to the post office, or wasting my valuable standing in long lines. Stamps.com also provides records of all your postage prints, so when customers inquire about their package, research is easy. Here is a sample of what the print record looks like (from my Stamps.com account). That day I shipped quite a few items. It was pouring down rain and I didn't have to get out in the rain and drag all my stuff to the post office. (Click the image to enlarge.)

Here is how to get your two freebies.

1)Choose any eBook from my website and choose the Trial Pay option. The eBook will be free. Maybe there is one you haven't read yet.

2)After clicking the Trial Pay button, and you arrive on the Trial Pay page, choose the Stamps.com offer. Just sign up with Stamps.com no-risk 4 week trial on the next screen. You will be asked to enter your name, address (for postage printing purposes) and email address. You must be a new Stamps.com customer to qualify.

FAQ's about the Stamps.com offer:

How does the No-Risk Trial work?

New customers are eligible for the 4 Week No-Risk Trial. Simply cancel before the trial period ends and you will not be charged. If you like the service, do nothing and your account continues automatically.

What do I get for trying the service?
Your Stamps.com account automatically starts with $5 free postage to use during your trial.

How much does it cost?
If you decide to keep the service the cost is $17.95/month plus the cost of postage you print. No hidden costs, cancel anytime. You can buy postage in batches of $10, $25, $50, or more.

Do I need special labels to print postage?
No. Stamps.com allows you to print postage on standard labels, envelopes or plain paper. (Note: I use plain paper. I am cheap! I just use regular white paper and clear carton/packaging tape. It is so much cheaper than labels! I buy the tape at Costco or Sam's in a multipack for about $15.)

Click here to get started. Stop wasting your time and energy going to the post office!

UPDATE: Several sellers have contacted me asking why I don't use Paypal shipping. Stamps.com is more user friendly when it comes to international shipments. It allows you to print any type of international postage, whereas Paypal does not. I use First Class International on a daily basis and Paypal does not offer this option. Using Stamps.com is the only way I can print int'l postage from home. (I've also tried Endicia and found it was not user friendly.) Another drawback with Paypal shipping is the way the postage prints on full pages - the top half is the shipping label, the bottom half is the seller's record. (Unless this has changed?) I found it very wasteful as far as paper and labels are concerned. Stamps.com lets you print 5 labels to a page instead of just one.

Thrift Store Item to Sell on eBay - Vintage Pyrex Amish Pattern

Vintage Pyrex is highly collectible and a good seller on eBay. There are so many patterns out there, but this post will focus on the blue and white Amish pattern. This is the one we had in my home when I was growing up. I remember my mom mixing brownie batter in the big white bowl with the "funny ladies" on the outside.

You can find the single pieces (bowls, casserole dishes, butter dishes, baking pieces, etc.) at thrift stores for $1-$3 each. Also check garage sales and estate sales. Here are a few recently completed listings for vintage Pyrex in the Amish pattern.

Stay at Home Moms - More Ways to Make Money from Home

Since having my first child back in 1994, when the internet was in its infancy, I was constantly on the prowl for ways to make money from home because I desperately wanted to be a stay at home mom. (And that was before it was cool.) That is an old pic of my kids and me, circa 1998.

SAHMs had very few resources back then other than playgroups, and of course no blogs, online groups, or forums to interact and communicate with other moms in the same situation. I've done everything possible (legal!) to avoid a "real" job including cleaning houses, babysitting other children, telemarketing (YUCK!), making and selling crafts, data entry, and bulk mailings. Those types of jobs pretty much stunk.

Once the internet became so accessible and affordable, I started trying everything out there to make money. Some things worked, some didn't. eBay is the jewel in the crown for me, but I have also tried and/or currently do many other things, too. The key to making money from home is to do a lot of different things. Here is a list of ways you can really make money online - without upfront costs, starter kits, or any other investment. Maybe these ideas will work for you, too.

Surveys. Below is a list of sites that pay you to take surveys. I've done some of these and they do pay.

The Survey Doctor

Ipsos

Panda Research

SendEarnings

Product Reviews. Several sites offer payment for your written review. You don't have to have a blog. You don’t have to purchase anything. Use what is in your home already. Check ReviewStream and ePionions. You can submit product review videos to ExPoTV. I did quite a few of these. If you are just dying to see them, click here. You can also sign up at Vindale Research.

Writing for pay. Of course my favorite is eHow, but you can also make money on Bukisa, Suite 101, and Associated Content.

Photography. Submit photos to Shuttershock, I Stock Photos, and Camera Dollars. You can also Google “Get paid to submit photos” for more sites.

Don't forget SwagBucks. I got 2 $10 Starbucks cards in the mail yesterday. All you do is use their search engine and you get points that you can redeem for free stuff. Click here to sign up for SwagBucks if you aren't already using it.

Check out these options and you might find some easy ways to make money from home using your computer. I gotta say, it sure beats cleaning somebody's house!

Are You Wasting Money on Packaging Your eBay Items?

Packaging can be tricky. You want your item to arrive intact, not damaged, and looking professional. But, are you over-packaging your items to the point where you are paying more for shipping?

eBay sellers are always looking for ways to cut costs, especially since our costs are always rising. Think about it, eBay fees increase, postage fees increase, and the cost of doing business increases all the time. We have to stay on our toes and continuously re-evaluate our processes to find ways to cut costs, without sacrificing quality.

Examine your shipping process. For example, some sellers of children’s boutique clothing have been brainwashed to believe that they must wrap the clothing in tissue paper and tie it with a fancy ribbon. Where did this idea come from? From traditional brick and mortar boutique shops who package their items that way.

If you are just starting out on eBay, you are not an established brick and mortar (or even eCommerce) boutique, you don’t have the budget for expensive wrapping. You can easily cut this cost – it just is not necessary.

Clear plastic works just as well, looks professional, is inexpensive, and protects clothing if the package should get wet in transit. When you order clothing from major catalog retailers or online department stores, doesn’t your order usually come wrapped in plastic? It is perfectly acceptable.

In some cases, reducing your packaging by just one ounce can mean the difference in a few dollars per package. I’ve seen it happen myself, especially on first class and international shipping. By trimming the packaging just a bit so that the weight stays below a certain threshold, I can save $2 on one package sometimes. Add this up over 100 or so packages a month and you have a substantial savings. This is called working smarter, not working harder!

Look on eBay for plastic packing materials and lightweight poly mailers. You can get these for just a few cents each when purchased in bulk. Below is where I purchase my shipping supplies - yep, on eBay!

Value Mailers: White poly mailers with self-sealing strip (great for First Class domestic and First Class International.)

In Motion Gear: Clear plastic bags with flap. The 9x12 size is perfect for golf shirts (trust me, I've used thousands!), sweaters, most adult clothing.

Hope this helps you save some money on shipping!

Thrift Store Item to Sell on eBay - Tennis Apparel

Spring is in the air, and tennis is not far behind. Gently worn tennis apparel is a good seller, and plentiful in thrift stores! Here are a few tips for selling pre-owned tennis clothing.

Focus on performance fabrics such as like Nike Dri fit, Nike Sphere Dry, Adidas Climacool, Under Armor, etc. You will get the most money for these types of fabrics.

Look for tennis apparel in thrift stores, garage sales in tennis communities, and at TJ Maxx and Marshall's. You can find some huge deals.

Women's items sell better and are easier to find than men's.

Concentrate on leading brands including Nike, Nike Dri Fit, Nike Seamless, Nike Sphere, Under Armour, Adidas, Avia, Tail, New Balance, Jamie Sadock, and Ellesse. Click here to read more about selling Jamie Sadock tennis apparel on eBay.

Look for the tennis skirts with the shorts made into them under the skirt. You can find these for around $3 at thrift stores and garage sales. These are really the only kind that sell very well on eBay. Look for these in the women's and children’s or girl’s section at thrift stores. Sometimes, tennis skirts are confused with a girl's skirt and are placed in the wrong section of the store. Below are a few listings for tennis clothing that have recently sold on eBay. All of these examples are for pre-owned items.

Nike Tennis Dress size S (4-6)

Nike Fit Dry Fit women's tennis skirt/skort EUC XS 0-2

What to Sell on eBay - Medicine Samples

Here is another free item you can sell on eBay and make a profit - medicine samples. I have a box of medicine freebies and I constantly add to it. Whenever I see a free offer for a medicine or health product sample, I get it and add it to my box. Then, periodically I batch up similar products and put them up for sale on eBay. You can do this as an auction, store inventory, or even a mystery auction. Offer international shipping on these medicine sample listings. Many countries have a national or socialized health care system (which is not a good thing) and cannot get these over the counter products without going to a doctor and getting a prescription. Buy offering medicine samples for sale on eBay, you can help people around the world get the medicines they can't get in their own country.

Here are some offers you can sign up for to get your own stash of free samples started.

What to Sell on eBay - Your Own Jewelry

Drastic times call for drastic measures. People are taking drastic measures these days to keep their homes, pay their bills, and survive the recession. If you haven't considered selling your own jewelry on eBay, this may be an option for you. A few months ago, I sold some jewelry for a friend. It was her diamond engagement ring and wedding band. This was a very personal decision for my friend and her husband, but her husband is out of work and they had to find a way to come up with some cash to pay bills.

Jewelry is always a good seller on eBay. Here are a few tips if you are selling jewelry:

Get an appraisal if possible. (You may already have one.) Show a copy of the appraisal on the listing. This will put buyers at ease and show that the item is authentic and show its value.

Provide all the technical details such as carat weight, clarity, grade, type of gold, where you bought it, the age of the piece, etc.

Show several photos with different views. Be thorough.

Always ship the item with a tracking number and delivery confirmation.

Here are a few listings for diamond engagement rings (similar to the one I sold for my friend) that have recently sold on eBay. All of these examples are previously owned.

14K DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT WEDDING RING. $5,000.00 Sz. 7

Platinum Diamond WeddingSet, sz 7

1.10 CTW DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT WEDDING RING SET SZ 7.5

Another option is to get cash for your gold from National Gold Buyers. I've seen several people on FaceBook discussing this and they say it is fast, easy, and you can get good money with this program. Everybody has that little box or envelope of those broken gold chains and pieces that we are probably never going to get fixed. Click the banner below for more information on how to get cash for your gold.

Selling Dollar Store Items on eBay for Profit

Dollar stores such as Dollar Tree and Dollar General have all kinds of goodies you can sell on eBay for profit. Here is how to use dollar stores to find your eBay inventory.

Find a local store that is good about keeping shelves stocked well. Ask the store manager or employees when inventory is stocked and plan your trip around that time. Early birds get the worm at dollar stores. Think about it like a garage sale - the first shoppers get the best selection.

Keep your eyes out for discontinued items. Pay close attention to scents, shades, and sizes that have been discontinued. (Check my hot lists for exact items.)

Consider seasonal items. You may find sun products in the fall. Stock up on the good brand names (Aveeno, Neutrogena) and hold until spring. Check expiration dates.

Look for higher end cosmetics like L'Oreal, Neutrogena, Revlon, etc. Cosmetics are great to sell in a batch or log.

Soap. I've listed several soaps on my Hot Lists that have been found in dollar stores. Manufacturers are constantly changing the packaging, discontinuing scents, and changing formulas. Do your homework and stay informed of discontinued soaps and check dollar stores.

Books are good sellers. Bestsellers in both paperback and hardback show up in dollar stores. Consider selling these in a lot - such as several different books by the same author, or several books in the same category (romance, thriller, mystery, etc.)

Thrift Store Item to Sell on eBay - Clairol Benders Hair Curlers

You can find these funky hair curlers at thrift stores for about $3 a set and they sell on eBay for about $25 a set. Some come in a hard case, some come in a soft vinyl case. These hair curlers make spiral curls, and these sets are great for travel because they are so compact. Even if all of the benders are not in the set, these are worth trying to sell. Here are a few recently completed listings. All of these examples are for used or pre-owned items that could be found at garage sales or thrift stores. Notice that in some of them the seller has grouped two sets together.

The Power of Positive Thinking

We are all feeling the pinch of the recession. Times are hard and things may get worse before they get better. But remember, "This too shall pass." The economy will recover, we just don't know when.

Earlier this week, I wrote an article called, "How to Survive the Recession on One Income" that contains some great tips for cutting back financially without really feeling the pain. I am a single parent and this is the way I've been living for years! Be resourceful, be careful, and you will make it.

Hopefully this article will help some of you out there. I'd like to ask that you forward it to anyone who may need uplifting, feels overwhelmed, or needs or some positive energy. We can reach out to others and spread something positive. TV, radio, and the news can be so depressing. A positive attitude is an amazing thing.

(Don't you love that pic? I'm a Leo, I couldn't resist!)

Enjoy your weekend!

Thrift Store Item to Sell on eBay - Bobby Jones Golf Shirts

In an earlier post, I explained how the Master's Golf Shirt has been my number one seller in the men's category. Running a close second is the Bobby Jones shirt.

Bobby Jones shirts are unique because of the golfer design on the placket. Most Bobby Jones shirts retail for over $100, many up to $175. Also, most of them are made in Italy which indicates high quality. Highest sale price will come with the larger sizes, bright colors, and specific golf course logos. If you can find a Bobby Jones with the Masters logo, you've done well!

Here are a few completed listings. All of these examples are for pre-owned or EUC shirts. These shirts can be purchased at thrift stores for $3-$4.

Men's Exclusive Bobby Jones Golf Shirt XL Mint

Bobby Jones ~ ITALY ~ polo golf shirt ~ XXL ~ Sweeet!!!

NICE BOBBY JONES GOLF SHIRT polo SUPER BLACK PATTERN L

Listing Tips:

Show a photo of the golfer design on the placket. That is a huge selling point and if you don't show it or mention it, buyers will ask.

Include the words "Made in Italy" in your title - if that is what the tag says.

Include the words "golfer placket" in the title if the shirt has the design on the placket.

Golf shirts are easy to find in thrift stores, off-price stores, and from other sources if you know where to look. I started off in the eBay business selling men's golf shirts and have sold over 10,000 of them in my career.

Don't Offer Counterfeit Items on eBay

Counterfeit merchandise such as handbags, watches, and clothing funds all kinds of illegal activity such as drug trafficking, terrorism, gangs, prostitution, child labor, and organized crime. When you buy a counterfeit item, your money is funding illegal activities.

eBay is very serious about sellers offering counterfeit items. No doubt counterfeits are rampant on eBay, but eBay has a challenge monitoring millions of listings. If you are caught selling replica or counterfeit items, your store can be shut down and you can be suspended as a seller.

Make 100% sure the item is authentic. If you are absolutely sure of its authenticity, then you may use the brand name as a key word in your title. (Example - Rolex, Burberry, Coach, Tory Burch.) If you aren't sure, don't try to sell it on eBay, the risks are too high!

If the item is not an actual branded product, for example a Burberry purse, do not compare your item to the branded product. You cannot use phrases like, "Men's Blazer Similar to Prada," or, "Women's Handbag Like Coach." This is key word spamming and is grounds for having your listing removed.

Your listing may only contain the word "New" in the title if the item is brand new. You are not allowed to use phrases like, "as new," or "like new." This violates eBay policy and is considered key word spamming.

Take your own photos and write your own descriptions, in your own words. Never copy another seller's photo or description. If you are caught doing this, your listing can be pulled and you can be suspended.

Click here to take the tutorial on eBay's Intellectual Property Policies.

There may very well be authentic handbags lurking in thrift shops in more affluent cities. The key to selling handbags on eBay is to know if the item is authentic or a fake. If you want to know more in-depth information about how to identify counterfeit handbags, here is an eBook that you'll find helpful: "Authentic Designer Handbags Guide." Click here to get the guide. Get Free Items from Craigslist to Resell on eBay

Have you ever looked at the free section on Craigslist? You can find all kinds of good stuff to resell on eBay! There is a little leg work involved, but getting free inventory is one way to increase your profits.

Visit CraigsList.com. It is free to use Craigslist.

Choose the city closest to you. For the best selection, choose the largest big city nearest you. It may be worth a little extra driving to a big city for a better selection.

Look for the FOR SALE section. Under that, you will see the category FREE.

Search often. New items are added 24/7. The good stuff goes fast, so you have to stay informed and act quickly.

Free items may include clothing, small furniture, baby items, dishes and kitchen items, small electronics, sports equipment, toys, linens, decorations, tools, automotive supplies, pet products, and office supplies. If you are knowledgeable about repair (for example, computer repair), consider getting freebies from Craigslist, repairing them, and reselling on eBay.

Follow-Up - Discontinued Redken Rewind 06

This is a follow up to the post about the discontinued Redken Rewind. Some things I have learned:

1) Not all Krogers (and stores who operate under the Kroger banner) carry Redken products. Check the bigger stores, or those in affluent areas of town. Click here to see a list of stores that operate under the Kroger Company.

2) Kroger clearance bins are in different places in different stores. Look in front of the pharmacy, in front of the registers, and near the health and beauty section. If you can't find them ASK!

3) Ulta has Redken Rewind 06. I checked two locations, and both have about 15 jars. The product has not been marked down yet. You can do one of two things: Wait until the item is put on clearance, or wait until the price goes up on eBay and you can justify buying it at full price. Click here to read about Ulta, what it is, and how to work the Ulta system to get free items and discounts. I shop there regularly and find incredible deals on name brand products that have been put on clearance.

Creative Method for More Savings on eBay Inventory

I've learned to think out of the box when it comes to discounts and coupons that I can use to buy eBay inventory. Here is a little trick I've used for a while. Use the shopping coupons in the Entertainment Book to increase your discounts on sale and clearance items you buy to resell on eBay.

For example, the 2009 Entertainment Book has coupons for retail, health and beauty (drug stores), music, books, video, and more businesses where you can get discounts on items to buy and resell on eBay. For example, there are several $5 off coupons for small local drug stores in my area. I usually hit those places anyway for clearance items to resell on eBay.

The 2009 Entertainment Book is also full of discounts on restaurants (both fast food and fine dining), movie tickets, and attractions like your local zoo or amusement park. The book can pay for itself in one visit to some restaurants. If you can get attraction tickets in advance, you can resell them on eBay. For example, there is an attraction in Atlanta called the Midieval Dinner Theatre and you can buy one ticket, get one free. Retail price of each ticket is $52. So I could do that deal, get a free ticket, and sell both for less than the going rate, an make a profit. You could come up with all kinds deals on tickets to sell.

You will also find discount coupons for haircuts, nail salons, tanning salons, and automotive services like oil changes that you yourself can use all year long. Click here to enter your zip code, and take a look at the discounts available in your area. Thru this offer, you can get the 2009 Entertainment book for half price - $12.50, rather than the normal $25 price. I've got mine and I have already gotten a free coffee and ice cream.

Are You Using UPromise?

Upromise.com

I've been enrolled in UPromise for years and every little bit adds up. Just like using grocery coupons, a dollar here and there may not seem like much, but over months and years, the savings will shock you.

UPromise is an easy way to earn money for your children's college education. You aren't using your own money, you are getting cash back on eligible purchases by UPromise partners. In other words, manufacturers, retailers, restaurants, and other large companies give you cash back on eligible purchases and these funds go directly into your UPromise account. UPromise rewards you for using their program, and the rewards come in the form of money for college.

How it works: You register a credit or debit card with UPromise. When you make qualified purchases (with the UPromise logo or listed on the UPromise site), cash goes directly into your UPromise account. It is free to register and use the program.

Grocery stores: Get 1%-3% back on thousands of qualifying products at over 21,000 grocery stores.

Online shopping: Get 1%-25% back from over 600 retailers.

Restaurants: Get up to 8% back from over 8,000 restaurants.

You are probably buying a lot of these products or doing business with UPromise partners anyway. Why not be making a money for your child's future education? Especially if your children are small, you've got time on your side to earn a substantial amount. Click here to sign up with UPromise and start earning rewards!
