Stand Out in the eBay Crowd

Today's post is provided by Paul Cohen from Seller Sourcebook.

Stand Out in the eBay Crowd
More Images in eBay Listings = Sales
Sales = $$$
Paul Cohen -- SSB

You have to stand out in the eBay crowd.

Turn on CNN.

Pick up a newspaper.

Talk to my father-in-law (who’s quite vocal about the subject).
You don’t have to go far to hear the news that this country is going through the worst economic crisis it has likely ever seen.

Everyone has less and the goal at the end of the day is to fatten your wallet. That means doing one of three things:

1. Spend less
2. Make more
3. Both!

Now, more than ever is the time to get serious about your eBay selling because with a soft economy – every penny you make is more valuable than it was yesterday. You have to make the right decisions about how to present your auctions in order to maximize your sales.

Look to The Seller Source Book (SSB) – The solution to the problem and the best way to both spend less and make more with your auctions.

Consider the single biggest tip experts hand out most often for creating a successful listing: Add pictures.

A simple solution to the one biggest problem with online shopping – the buyer just doesn’t have the option to pick the item up, shake it, smell it, etc. before making their purchase. So in order to sell what you’ve got – you need to show it off as much as possible.

The standard eBay services allow you to add one picture for free but one normally just isn’t enough. And at $0.15 for each additional picture you want to add – you’ll quickly be reaching for your wallet.

That’s not going to save you money.

Using SSB gives you access to an online Image Manager that allows you to very simply drag and drop your images into their service. Don’t worry too much about storage space – SSB offers plenty. If your images are an average of 50k in size you’ll have room for about 6,000 images.

Also, if you’re worried about bandwidth limits or auto-deletions – don’t. There are no bandwidth limits or auto-deletions with SSB.

Yes, there is a small subscription fee to access the toolsets SSB offers.
But consider this: You can get a subscription to SSB for as low as $5.83 a month. If you list 20 items on eBay a month each with 5 images, that is $0.60 per listing in additional image fees which adds up to $12.00 total.

Your subscription to SSB would save you $6.17 a month!

Also consider SSB offers a whole suite of tools to make your listings sell more effectively on top of the robust Image Manager solution. These tools include more than 2,000 professionally designed auction templates, deep knowledge available through SSB’s Seller Resources about successful eBay selling and U.S.-based personalized support.

It’s true, you have to spend money to list your items for sale on eBay. It’s also true that you should be spending your time listing more items, not hovering over a calculator trying to figure out how much profit you will lose by adding a few pictures using eBay’s tools.

Solve these problems with SSB. Keep your profits in your pocket and create listings that sell the first time.

List right the first time. List right with SSB.

How to Pull Money Out of Thin Air

That would be nice, right? I've received quite a few emails over the past few weeks from readers about slow sales. Really slow. I'll be honest with you, I am seeing it, too.

Remember that eBay is cyclical. The economy is sluggish around the world. But don't give up. I've been through tougher times than this. There are other things you can do to bring in some cash while you wait for eBay to come back to life. Here are actual things I have done when money was tight and bills had to be paid.

Gather up your loose change and empty those coin jars. Men are notorious for having large piles of coins all over the place. I mean, they don't have a purse so what else are they going to do with it when their pants are in the wash? Ask your husband to turn over all his loose change. Roll up those coins and take them to the bank for cash. Avoid the CoinStar machines - they charge an 9% fee. Do it yourself and keep more. Kids can help and you can teach them about money.

Got a teenager? Help him get a part time job. There is no reason teens can't work a few hours a week to help pay for their clothing, cell phone, entertainment, and other extras. Make it a family effort. Click here for the Teen Job Finder - just enter your zip code.

Consider selling your wedding gown. These do well on Craigslist. I sold mine about 10 years ago when one of our renters quit paying his rent and we had 2 mortgages on one income. OUCH - we had to do some drastic things. Are you going to wear it again? Is it better to raise the cash to pay bills, or keep your wedding gown in the closet forever?

Sell your plasma. No, not the TV, the liquid stuff in your blood. You can make up to $60 a week doing this. If you and your spouse alternate weeks, you can bring in a couple hundred dollars a month. (You can't do this one forever though!)

Drastic times call for drastic measures. Click here for a list of 13 things you can do RIGHT NOW to raise some cash for bills or holiday spending. The most important thing is to remember:

THIS TOO SHALL PASS. KEEP ON TRUCKIN'.

Walmart Won't Take Your Internet Coupon?

After yesterday's post regarding the Walmart sale item and coupon, several people have reported that their Walmart won't accept internet coupons. WRONG!!!

Read and download the Walmart Coupon Policy, and keep it in your wallet or purse. (Make sure you print the policy out from the Walmart website - not here- so that the web address and Walmart logo will be on the printout.) The Walmart coupon policy states:

Wal-Mart Coupon Policy

Wal-Mart accepts the following types of coupons (see guidelines below):

Manufacturer coupons (Cents Off)

Free merchandise (or manufacturer's Buy-One-Get-One-Free) coupons

Store coupons

Pharmacy (Advertising and Promotional) coupons

Internet coupons

Soft drink container caps

The following are guidelines and limits:

Wal-Mart only accepts coupons for merchandise we sell and only when presented at the time of purchase.

Coupons should have an expiration date and be presented within the valid dates. Wal-Mart will not accept expired coupons.

Internet coupons should be legible and say "Manufacturer Coupon." There should be a valid remit address for the manufacturer and a scannable bar code.
Only one coupon per item is permitted.

Use of 40 or more coupons per transaction will require approval by Customer Service Manager.

I run into this issue sometimes, and if you show the printed policy to customer service or the store manager, they will accept the coupon. Just be firm and state that the information is on the corporate website and they must honor your coupons. It is a CORPORATE policy - the store must abide by it. I learned this from my black belt coupon friends over at Money Saving Mom.

Hot Tip - Walmart Clearance Item

I have found several of these items marked down at Walmart. Regular Walmart price is $19.99, markdown price is $8. Visit 2 different links for $5 and $3 off coupons, which you can print multiple times to use on multiple purchases of this item.

These items sell for up to $31 on eBay. Remember, just because something is in your Walmart, doesn't mean that everyone in the country or world has access to it! Your potential profit could be up to $27! Look on the shelf as well on on the clearance carts at the front of the store.

What is the item? Click here to find out!

Dollar / Pound Exchange Rate at 27 Year Low - Adjust Your UK Pricing

Several readers have contacted me over the last few weeks with this comment, "I'm not making as much money on eBay UK as I used to. What am I doing wrong?" After looking at their stores, the only problem I can see is that their pricing needs to be adjusted based on current exchange rates.

For example, one seller set up her store when the exchange rate was 1.9. Now, the exchange rate is 1.5, but she hasn't changed her pricing. Let's look at the math.

She is selling an item that costs her $7.50. She is selling it for £10.95, with £5.95 shipping.

At an exchange rate of 1.9, her profit looks like this:

Item cost = $7.50
Listing fee = .86
Selling price = $20.80
Final value fee =$2.20
Shipping fee collected from customer = $11.30
Actual shipping fee= $11.36
Profit = $10.18

At an exchange rate of 1.5, her profit looks like this:

Item cost = $7.50
Listing fee = .58
Selling price = $16.42
Final value fee =$1.70
Shipping fee collected from customer = $8.93
Actual shipping fee= $11.36
Profit = $4.21

As you can see, the selling price has decreased by $4.38, and the amount the customer is paying for shipping has decreased by $2.37. So, this seller is collecting $6.75 less from the customer, yet her cost for the item and the actual shipping cost has not changed. Her profits have dropped by 60%.

The only way to overcome this reduction in profit is to raise prices (including shipping fees), which offsets the lower exchange rate. Many sellers are suffering losses on eBay UK right now, because they have not adjusted their pricing based on the much lower exchange rate. If you have alot of listings, going in and changing your pricing will be a daunting task, but seeing your profits drop by 60% isn't any fun either. Unfortunately, fluctuating exchange rates are just part of international selling. The Dollar/Pound exchange rate is at its lowest since 1981.
